The Promise of Deliverance

Deliverance in Bhagavad Gita (BG 18.66)

Bhagawan Uvacha:
ahaḿ tvāḿ sarva-pāpebhyo

Krishna told Arjun (the one who represented the world): Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reactions. Do not fear.

Deliverance in NT

Romans 6:23 - For the wages of sin [is] death; but the gift of God [is] eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
2 Timothy 3:15 - And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

It seems both Krishna and Jesus tried to console and comfort the world not to worry about the sins. Both wanted us to act fearlessly. What about righteousness? It is assumed one who has faith in any form of the Supreme Lord cannot commit a sin. An assumption though for so-called believers of faith have been committing unforgivable crime against mankind through the ages.

Coming back to the original point, the verses clearly show all what is expected from us to be free in our mind and fearless. We are infinite but our inferior perception of ourselves and fear bound us. The deities have tried to resolve this problem by offering salvation in lieu of faith. Nobody would know whether deliverance was actually done or the one with faith can walk on water, but for sure that one can win the battle of life.

But despite all these facts, considering the scenario of the understanding of common men and the exploitation by clerics, wouldn't it been better had the deities talked of believing in the self rather than an external deity? Their preaching about believing in them as the supreme god gave rise to religions and thereby religious conflicts. Of course, it was not just due to the two of them, every religion talks of this supremacy and give rise to nothing but conflict.

Another point to be considered, the word of god should be beyond the scope of time i.e. eternal. It cannot be referred to any particular context. Unfortunately most of the scriptures are highly contextual and localized especially with Semitic religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Hence their effectiveness was applicable only during that relevant time and location when and where it was delivered.

In today's world, we have been vested with education for the mass and free of speech, most important education has given us freedom of thought. It is not just our choice but our duty to make use of these privileges and make a better world out of it. Let the God in all of us act through us and deliver us to goodness.
